Building & Construction
The building and construction industry is a major driver of the Australian economy with home building a significant component of activity.
The industry is extremely diverse with occupations ranging from labourer to skilled trades such as bricklaying and plumbing to architectural and engineering services. Employment ranges from owner operated to thousands of employees in major firms.
Darwin has the highest number and range of projects of the NT regions and activity is summarised below.
Project activity in the region:
Most of the projects centre on mining and related manufacturing plant construction, with defence and residential construction also contributing high value.
Darwin Waterfront and Convention Centre project valued at $1,100 million commenced in May 2005. NT businesses will reap the major benefits from the project with approximately 1 000 jobs being created and an 85% local content component guaranteed in the project contracts.
Offsite Construction
Involves the fabrication and manufacturing of building components to be used or installed in a building structure, such as joinery, machining, shop fitting, stair building, and stonemasonry.
Plumbing Services
Plumbing is often regarded separately from other building and construction activity due to its specialised and technical nature.
